Musical Score MUSIC

Students in the Music Program may choose from a wide range of class offerings either in Instrumental or Vocal Music, or a combination of both. The diversity of options and depth of focus are unique in Sonoma County. Most class levels are determined through audition.

Instrumental Music includes six groups, all maintaining a busy and rewarding public performance schedule but with the curriculum focusing primarily on the day-to-day rehearsal, exploration and discipline of Music. Level placement is determined by audition and there are no beginning classes available. The four concert bands include a freshman level Band, a sophomore Concert Band, an advanced level Symphonic Band and the top level, Chamber Winds. Also offered is String Orchestra, the only one of its kind at the high school level in Sonoma County, and Jazz Ensemble, which both require students to be concurrently enrolled in one of the Concert Bands or Orchestra.

Vocal Music is comprised of four choral groups at SRHS. Each group performs at three main concerts a year as well as several other choral events locally and on tour.  In contrast to other ArtQuest specialties, vocal ensembles consist of only one hour of rehearsal per day.  Regardless of vocal level, all choral music classes focus on the day-to-day rehearsal process. It is also a goal of the program to build musicians out of singers. This means the continuing development of music reading skills including interval recognition, rhythmic proficiency and musical vocabulary development. Creating artistry through singing, being “tuned in” to one’s own instrument and being a member of any one of the choirs can be a life-affirming and changing experience. You are warmly invited to be a part of this program.
